Obviously that varies with manufacturers of each, but there is a distinct difference in both weight and case capacity. That is not true of 5.56 vs 223, so maybe that's what you're thinking of. The only difference between 308win and 7.62x51 is the system of measurement. .308 inches = 7.62milimeters = 30 caliber. 51 milimeters is the case length = 308win case length. You can fire either one in either rifle. The issue comes when you reload.
