Albini, living in Chicago, already had a strong reputation as a guitarist with the bands Big Black and Rapeman, and as a recording engineer, having recorded albums by the Jesus Lizard, the Pixies, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Superchunk, Jawbreaker, and many more.
